El Dorado Arts Council (EDAC) empowers artistic vision at all stages of development, promoting a vibrant community, both culturally and economically, and support all art forms. EDAC promotes and connects local artists and organizations throughout El Dorado County by providing advocacy, education, programs, and services.
The El Dorado Arts Council Gallery at the Fausel House is a venue for showcasing the work of artists from all over El Dorado County, and is a destination for visitors and residents alike. Rotating exhibitions of painting and drawings, photography, sculpture, and mixed media are displayed throughout the year, along with student artwork and traveling shows. Many of the works on display at the Gallery are also available for purchase. EDAC also presents readings, workshops, and other public events at the Gallery.
El Dorado Arts Council programs include:
- Poetry Out Loud – an annual poetry recitation competition in which hundreds of thousands of high school students from every U.S. state and territory perform classic and contemporary poetry that they have learned by heart. Poetry Out Loud aims to encourage the study and appreciation of great poetry. Students not only learn about their literary heritage, but also build self-confidence through mastering public speaking skills.
- Veteran’s Voices – an ongoing writing workshop for veterans held at El Dorado Arts Council’s office at the historic Fausel House. This regular series of six-week workshops is an opportunity for veterans—in particular those who’ve served in Iraq and Afghanistan—to write their stories (service-related or not) in the form of memoir, letter, poetry, fiction, or drama. The workshop (free to all veterans) provides veterans with the skills to chronicle their experiences, translating thought and memory into the written word.
- Art in Public Places – rotating exhibitions for local institutions where works of art transform the space. Current locations include the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors Boardroom, Placerville Senior Center, Gold Country Retirement Center and Images of Hope (part of the Marshall Cancer Resource Center).
The El Dorado Arts Council serves as a State-Local Partner to the California Arts Council. This State-Local Partnership Program fosters community development through the arts at the county level via partnerships between the California Arts Council and local arts agencies. Partners benefit from funding, technical assistance and coordinated activities that support their efforts to enrich the lives of the members of their communities through the arts. EDAC also partners with the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors to promote, nurture and sustain the arts in the region, and serves as a help desk for arts inquiries of all kinds. EDAC also serves as the anchor nonprofit for smaller organizations, offering an insurance program and fiscal services.
EDAC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is funded in part by sponsors and the community; tax-deductible contributions sustain artistic discovery and the opportunity to learn, connect, and share.
